Write a critical analysis of the passage from A Handful of Dust Essay

Write a critical analysis of the passage from A handful of Duststarting is mummy coming moxie today? (p55) and culture Ive beencarrying on anyhow this week (p 57), showing how far you think it exemplary of Waughs methods and effects in the novel. The passage starts with John Andrew, the most innocent mortal in thenovel speaking. He is questioning the absence of his mother and delay eagerly for her return from monkey-womans party. His fatherreassures him that she is sure to be back that very day. John Andrewpoints out that Brenda would non withdraw seen Thunderclap for quartet days, this is sweet as he misses the point that she has not seen her own tidingsfor four days either It shows how attached little John Andrew is tohis horse, as if he were in his mothers shoes he would not be desperate to get back to his mother but to his horse. We know thatBrenda and Tony do not play a big part in Johns life, he has a nannyand is close to the stable boy, and sees him as a role model. It is brighten to see that Tony had been suffering with from lonelinessand missing Brenda by his reply to the stationmaster, Ive beenexpecting her all day. The two have a little chat trance they waitfor Brendas train to arrive. The stationmaster refers to Brenda asHer ladyship, a title she sure does not live up to on herjaunts to London. She herself admits it when she sees that the twohave sleep together to the station for her I dont at all deserve itWaugh puts a lifelike little speech together for John to tell hismother on the way home. It is very amusing as it is written as a childof his age would speak. It has little punctuation and is one very achesentence containing lots of different information about the p... ...time she is done Tony is agreeing to the flat.I shew there were two main points which sprang to mind, regardingWaughs methods and effects in this piece. distinctly this story ofmarital betrayal relates closely to Waughs personal experience and heseems to be remarka bly generous towards Brenda. Her behaviour isclearly compulsive Ive found a flat and she is outspoken Ivebeen carrying on anyhow this week. Waugh trunk very compassionatein his attitude to the faithless Brenda and allows no consecrate of anger inTony, which would have been well-justified, he just says no deadening donethen. Also, this passage has a great range of ironic entailment and it isin parts exceptionally funny the irony of Tony reacting to Brendasconfession of carrying on madly with young men by inferring thatbuying a Pekingese would have been far worse is pure farce.
